L'amour est un Oiseau Rebelle (Easy Guided Performance)
“L’amour est un Oiseau Rebelle” or “Love is a Rebellious Bird” is an aria from Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera, Carmen. It's often referred to as “Habanera” because of the song style. Bizet created an elaborate arrangement and poetic lyrics beautifully describing the complicated state of being in love.
In this easy guided performance, join King Tritone in playing along to this epic Bizet composition with a single C bell. How does this work?

Harmony
- To bridge these two tonalities, the bass plays a melodic ostinato. This is a melodic phrase that is continually repeated.
- In this case, the bass in the backing track plays the Root, the 5th and the Octave, also known as a power chord!
- This chord form is a truncated version of a triad and doesn't have the quality of major or minor. It's able to provide the foundation for both keys for this reason. Often, this is why power chords are used, because they don't have a chord quality and can be more adaptive in chromatic music.
So, when King Tritone plays a single C bell, he is reinforcing the root note of the chord. C major and C minor chords share the same root, C!
Rhythm
For the easy version, King Tritone focuses on playing a steady beat with long half notes. The original composition is in the time signature 2/4 where a half note takes up the whole measure. Most students who are playing with the one-note version will be more familiar with the time signature 4/4 where it takes 2 half notes to fill a measure.

Sing, Sign and Play
Grab your red bell, C, go under the sea, and see what all the hype is about in this easy guided performance of "L'amour est un Oiseau Rebelle" or "Love is a Rebellious Bird." Happy Musicing!
