1. DIY instruments (with supervision)
Almost anything can be an instrument. Bang paper-plate cymbals, make cardboard sleigh bells, or a coffee-can drum. Model a steady beat together. (Watch small parts — choking hazard if unsupervised.) More ideas: our 14 DIY musical instruments.
2. Color-coded deskbells
Teach colors, numbers, and solfege with Prodigies deskbells. Make up little songs about each bell, or play bell hide-and-seek. The colors: Do–Red, Re–Orange, Mi–Yellow, Fa–Green, Sol–Teal, La–Purple, Ti–Pink, High Do–Red.
3. Dancing!
Hand them an over-sized shirt or cape and have a dance party. Every kid loves the FREEZE song by Steve & Greg, or the colorful Music Animation Machine by Smalin.
4. A first classical music book
It's never too early! My First Classical Music Book introduces composers and instrument families with bright illustrations and an audio CD — a book that grows with your child.
5. Music and movement
Walk Around, The Tooty Ta, and other follow-the-directions songs build gross-motor control, rhythm, and listening.
6. Flight of the Bumblebee
Play Flight of the Bumblebee and have your toddler “fly” fast or slow to match the music — great activity ideas here.
7. Short Prodigies videos
Even at two, kids love songs like C Major Pipes, Twinkle Twinkle, Sweet Beets, and Jingle Bells. Keep it to 1–2 short videos at a time and focus on meaningful play with pitch. See how the lessons work here.
8. High-information music (Nuryl)
Curated “high information music” from Nuryl is designed to enrich a young child's sense of pitch and harmony (the method Rick Beato used with his son Dylan).
9. Toca Band
A playful app to build a band with instruments and characters — fun supervised screen time.
10. Boomwhackers
Every toddler needs a set of boomwhackers — colorful pitched tubes, color-matched to the deskbells, perfect for call-and-response and rhythm play.
11. Free Prodigies Bells App
The free Prodigies Bells app turns any phone or tablet into a full set of color-coded deskbells — great for music on the go.
12. Playtime Prodigies
Our Playtime Prodigies primer series is made for around age two — a simpler, slower introduction to note names, numbers, colors, and simple rhythms, with lots of meaningful exposure to pitch. It's included with a membership and is the perfect starting point for toddlers.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 2-year-old really start music?
Yes — through play. Singing, dancing, color-coded bells, and short videos build real skills (beat, pitch, listening) at this age.
How much screen time is okay?
Keep it light — 1–2 short songs at a time, ideally played along with your toddler rather than passively.
What's the best first instrument for a two-year-old?
Press-to-play deskbells or lightweight boomwhackers — simple, sturdy, and color-coded so toddlers can play right away.
